On Sunday, October 26, the World War 2 Guys helped out at the 2nd Annual "Flight of Fright" event at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. In attendance we had Eric, Matt and Joe stationed at the B-29 Superfortress representing a Pacific Theater B-29 crew. Over at the C-47 Skytrain we had Donnie, Davan and Rhys representing the Jumping Spiders of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. We had lots of trick or treaters throughout the afternoon event and quite a few history-related conversations with visitors. We always have a great experience at the museum which holds a very special place in our hearts. At a D-Day display event at the museum in June of 2018, Deqlan, Donnie and Davan visited our display as kids and now 7 years later, they are the ones wearing the same uniforms to honor our World War II veterans. It's a great story and I'm glad we are passing along our love and appreciation of our nation's military history to a new generation!

On Saturday, August 2 the World War 2 Guys attended our second annual Open House event at the Commemorative Air Force's Great Plains Wing hanger and museum. Unlike last year, it was a gorgeous, cool summer morning with low humidity and temperatures in the 70s, so everyone really enjoyed being outdoors. We were served up stacks of golden pancakes with sausages, orange juice and coffee by the famous Pancake Man. Donnie caught an impressive 5 out of 6 pancakes that were flung on his plate. We had several tables set-up as a display focused on the B-29 Superfortress crews of the Pacific Theater in World War II. I designed two boards that outlined the unique responsibilities of each member of a B-29 crew. We also had a new promotional board for the World War 2 Guys to explain a little bit about who we are and what we do. There was a lot of great interaction with the public and as always we had a really fun time spending the morning together as a team. Next month we will be back in action at the Ft. Atkinson Timeline Weekend so come on out and see all of our amazing impressions!
On Sunday, April 13, the World War 2 Guys were back in action at the SAC Aerospace Museum's annual Operation: Easter Egg Hunt. We have a great turnout from our group with 8 members, all dressed in our Normandy M42 Jump Suits. Our mission was to escort the Easter Bunny around the museum and to be available for photos with kids. The museum went through over 3,000 Easter Eggs in just under an hour which was pretty impressive! We also had the opportunity as a group to get inside the C-47 and take some fun photos standing in the door. It was a quick, fun event and a great way to be involved in the community.
On Saturday, February 1, the World War 2 Guys visited the Durham Museum for a group meeting and a chance to dress up in some "classy" Class A uniforms. In attendance were Joe representing the 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division, Cody representing the 349th Infantry "Kraut Killers" of the 88th Division, Matt representing our own 507th PIR while stationed in Nebraska, Rhys representing the 101st Airborne Division, and Eric representing the 164th Infantry of the American Division that served on Guadalcanal. We had a fun unit meeting on one of the train cars nicknamed "The Cornhusker Club" and had a great conversation with one of the museum volunteers and historians named Raleigh. Unfortunately, our visit was a short one, but we will hopefully add this as a regular unit event in the years to come.
On Sunday, October 27, the World War 2 Guys got to take part in our first ever "Flight of Fright" event at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum. The fun feature of this family trick or treating experience was that volunteers like our group would get to throw candy from inside the museum's aircraft collection. So with our mission established, and bags of candy in hand, we manned our aircraft. Rhys was dressed as an Airborne trooper dropping candy from the C-47 Skytrain. Matt and Cody were assigned to the B-17 Flying Fortress. Eric and Bryson were stationed in the B-29 Super Fortress, Lucky Lady. And Jeff made it out for the day, roaming the museum hangers as an Army M.P. The only big SNAFU of the day was that there were WAY more trick or treaters than the museum was expecting!!! We ran out of our first large bags of candy within the first hour. So a resupply mission brought back additional bombloads of candy for the guys inside the planes. It was an awesome afternoon event and drew enormous crowds to the museum which was great to see. Our group's favorite aspect was just getting to spend some quality time in these legendary aircraft of World War II.
On Saturday, August 3, the World War 2 Guys attended our first ever Commemorative Air Force Open House at the Council Bluffs Airport. In attendance were Matt, Joe and Bryson doing a great job displaying some WWII U.S. Army Air Force uniform and equipment items. The Pancake Man was there too flipping pancakes for a fun breakfast experience.
On Independence Day, the World War 2 Guys were invited to take part in the Grand Opening of the new 4-D interactive "From Cornrow to Hedgerow" exhibit at the Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward. In attendance were Eric, Will, and Cody all representing the brave men of Nebraska's own 134th Infantry Regiment. Throughout the day we were situated in and around the museum's new Normandy hedgerow exhibit which features authentically uniformed mannequins in poses depicted in the National Guard Heritage Series painting done by Keith Rocco. We met and spoke with Ted Neill, the author of "Finding St.Lo" which is a biography of Gordon Cross and Bob Fowler. Bob was a longtime friend of our unit and remains one of the inspirations for why we honor our nations World War II veterans year after year. There were some excellent Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill impresonators at the museum for the big celebration and hundreds and hundreds of visitors through the doors all day long. It was an excellent way to spend the 4th honoring some of our state's most courageous men.
